Why a media library can trigger work
Photos can display detected items, people or pets, captions, and other information about photos and videos. Apple’s Media Intelligence documentation also describes on-device analysis for video highlights, key frames, and face grouping. Imports, restores, library changes, and software updates can make related processing more noticeable, though no public source assigns each operation specifically to mediaanalysisd.
That uncertainty matters: a process name and a momentary CPU reading are clues, not a diagnosis. If you have just imported a large collection or updated macOS, give the Mac a quiet period on power before changing anything. Confirm that the Photos library behaves normally and that the activity declines.
Escalate only on a repeatable symptom
Investigate when high activity returns during otherwise idle periods, blocks normal use, or occurs with Photos errors. Check available storage, install macOS updates, and note whether iCloud Photos or a recent import is still active. Back up the library before pursuing deeper support, especially if images appear missing or the library will not open.
Do not terminate system analysis processes or remove photo-library data to chase a CPU graph. Those interventions can interrupt valid work and make recovery harder. Apple Support is the appropriate next step for a library that stays unusable or repeatedly fails after normal maintenance.
An honest WattGuard reading
WattGuard shows this process family’s current CPU, wakeups and disk activity. Where macOS provides the data, it also shows current power and accumulated energy for the selected period. You can observe changes manually over time and compare them with the separate sleep analysis. It can help identify whether the pattern is transient and whether sleep sessions improve after the library settles. It cannot read your media, claim that one process caused a battery percentage change, or repair a Photos or macOS service. For process monitoring in the Store edition, complete the setup wizard and install its companion files first; see the Energy Hogs feature page for setup.
