Expected analysis work
A new or restored Photos library, an imported batch, iCloud Photos syncing, and a system update can all make background work more visible. The Photos app uses metadata and recognition features to make images and videos easier to find. Apple also documents on-device media-analysis technologies, but that developer documentation is not a promise that every observed photoanalysisd interval has one specific purpose.
Treat a short, explainable period of CPU use as background maintenance. Leave the Mac connected to power and let it sit idle when practical. Search in Photos and inspect a few recently imported items to see whether the library is becoming available, rather than assuming high CPU means corruption.
A safe investigation path
Check whether Photos is still importing or syncing and whether free storage is tight. Update macOS and Photos-related settings through System Settings, then observe whether the activity falls after the library becomes quiet. If the process repeatedly uses substantial resources for days without new library activity, if Photos crashes, or if the library cannot be opened, make sure your library is backed up and contact Apple Support.
Avoid force-quitting system daemons, deleting library databases, or using unverified cleanup scripts. Those actions can disrupt the library or force more work without identifying the cause. A single CPU spike cannot distinguish normal analysis from a genuine fault.
What WattGuard can show
WattGuard shows this process family’s current CPU, wakeups and disk activity. Where macOS provides the data, it also shows current power and accumulated energy for the selected period. You can observe changes manually over time and compare them with the separate sleep analysis. It keeps diagnostics local, but it cannot inspect private photo contents, repair the Photos library, or calculate exact watts for this process. For process monitoring in the Store edition, complete the setup wizard and install its companion files first; see the Energy Hogs feature page for setup.
