Confirm the model and build a baseline

Check About This Mac or System Information to confirm that the notebook is Intel-based. Record several comparable sleep sessions: battery level before and after, sleep duration, macOS version, power state, connected accessories, and any warmth or visible wake. Use their typical result as a working baseline.

WattGuard can calculate its own baseline from the median of three to fourteen prior sessions. This helps distinguish a continuing pattern from an unusual day and reduces the risk of crediting a troubleshooting change for a difference that would have occurred anyway.

Investigate normal software and hardware variables first

Activity Monitor's Energy pane can identify apps with high current Energy Impact and those preventing sleep. Review it while awake, then safely quit a known, nonessential app for one follow-up test. Check docks, external displays, storage, and Bluetooth or USB input devices in their own controlled sessions.

WattGuard can show a local sleep timeline derived from macOS power-log events, including sleep, normal wake, dark wake, charge change, and reported wake reasons. This helps locate repeating events, while still leaving the actual cause to be tested. A wake reason is not a full causal accounting.

Use Intel-specific reset guidance carefully

If the issue is persistent and you have already recorded the baseline, Apple provides SMC reset guidance for Intel-based Macs in relevant power-management situations. Follow Apple’s model-specific steps exactly. An SMC reset is not a general cure for every battery symptom and should not be applied to Apple silicon Macs.

Do not stack an SMC reset, low-level pmset changes, and accessory changes into one experiment. If behavior changes, you would not know what mattered. Restart, update macOS, and run Apple Diagnostics when the evidence points to a broader hardware concern.

Know when to move to service

Check the battery condition in System Settings. If service is recommended, or if Diagnostics reports a reference code, contact Apple Support or an authorized provider. Provide the model, macOS version, battery condition, baseline sessions, and which one-variable tests changed the result. That information helps distinguish sleep behavior from a battery or hardware issue.
